The Calangute Walk:
You would begin at St Alex Church in Calangute's Umta Vaddo. The church is
the backbone of the street. Twist around and have a look at the hill rock
facing the church. The foothills lead to the natural fresh water spring
called as Mottant which is considered to be an ideal spot for bathing and
picnicking. Long before the Portuguese arrived, every Goan village was like
an independent village. Every village had its own set of rules. The old
system has totally collapsed but the vaddos still remain a main part of the
village.
And if you walk through Saunta Vaddo, you would be amazed to know that
Sawants once lived here. Vaddo is named after the camels that were bought in
from Carambolim village in Tiswadi during a plague epidemic. So, Porba Vaddo
is named after the Prabhus, Agar Vaddo is named after salt pans, Naika Vaddo
is called after Naiks, Tivai Vaddo because it is near to the sea shore,
Madda Vaddo after madd or coconuts and Gaurav Vaddo fter the Gauds or dairy
farmers and Baga is simply named after Bhagwati river that flows through.
Umta Vaddo's St Alex's Church is the third incarnation of the church in
Calangute. It was the creation of Franciscans in 1595 and second one was
built in 1765. You can also walk past the church or come out in front and
walk on the main road to side lane behind the church. You need to take a
right turn to Calangute Tinto ( a Portuguese Market ) till you face Shri
Shantadurga Mandap. It is said that the original temple was destroyed and
the idol transferred to Nanora village and is rightly called as Nanora
Shantadurga Mahamai located in Naika Vaddo.
Go past the temple and walk up to the boutique hotel called as Pousad
Tauma. Take a left turn and you'll be glad to see two very fine temples of
mid-18th century Goan domestic architecture. Leave the hotel on your left
and take a right turn and you'll face two houses on your right side. Look at
with admiration the trimmings of the roof, tiles and wooden railings of the
Veranda. Walk past these, turn right and keep looking at these houses. End
your adventurous walk in Porba Vaddo at the lotus-filled pond.
